Jingdezhen Porcelain - Ming Dynasty (4)

In this part, we are going to discover the style change from Yuan to Ming due to the overthrow of Yuan regime and the rise of the Ming dynasty. As we know the Jingdezhen kiln has inseparable relation with the royal household, so it must impact the ceramic production from Jingdezhen kiln.

During Hongwu reign, the character of the porcelain produced from Jingdezhen kiln changed considerably. The design becomes more sinicized, which means it subscribes more Chinese taste, such as painted with more conventional floral and less Yuan motifs; the vigorous serpentine waves are transformed into a ring of surf; flowers like peonies with thinly outlined petals are replaced with simple chrysanthemum, etc.

Although, the cobalt blue used by Hong Wu reign as the same as Yuan did, both are imported from Persia(the old name of Iran), however, mostly the blue color shown with a little greyish compared with Yuan blue and white which is more bright and transparent.

The character of porcelain produced from Hong wu period heritages the momentum of Yuan, but the decorations are changing into the simple style with typical oriental ornamentation such as Chinese literati, or the scenes from Chinese opera and novel etc.
